Another day setting sail from Gisborne, hoping today’s catch will be enough to feed my family for one more week. At the tavern, I heard rumors of large schools of fish to the east; one of the neighborhood fishermen came back yesterday with his boat overflowing.
With the last of my savings, I filled the tank and managed to set up a simple netting system, hoping this journey will allow me to return with nets full and avoid the sea for at least three weeks. They say the waters there are treacherous, and it’s not uncommon for cyclones to form and storms to break out. But, as they say around here, nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Once today’s fishing is done, I’ll head back home, even if it means sleeping out in the open.

Otro día más zarpando desde Gisborne, con la esperanza de que la pesca de hoy me alcance para alimentar a mi familia una semana más. En la taberna escuché rumores de grandes bancos en dirección este; uno de los vecinos del barrio llegó ayer con el barco a rebosar.
Con los últimos ahorros que tenía, llené el depósito y logré instalar un sistema de redes sencillo, esperando que esta travesía me permita regresar con las redes repletas y evitar la mar durante al menos tres semanas. Dicen que las aguas allá son traicioneras, y que no es raro que se forman ciclones y se desate la tempestad. Pero, como dicen por aquí, quien no arriesga, no gana.
Una vez terminada la jornada de pesca, volveré a casa, aunque el regreso implique dormir a la intemperie.
